Today’s healthcare system requires a different approach to workforce development in nursing and health professions  Transformative Teaching has developed a model for teaching that leverages the latest research in pedagogy, simulation based education, and the neuroscience of learning to give health professions faculty the skills they need to create the competent reflective practitioner that is required by todays’ complex healthcare system.  

About Us

Founded by Mary K. Fey, RN, Ph.D., and Kate J. Morse, RN, Ph.D.  Transformative Teaching emerged from a commitment to improve the way nurses are taught.  We have leveraged our expertise in teaching, curriculum development and simulation to develop a model for teaching that addresses today’s faculty needs for all health professions.  

Services

At Transformative Teaching, we offer a comprehensive range of services designed to support the full spectrum of healthcare training needs. Our offerings include:

Simulation Design & Debriefing

We coach your faculty as they develop simulation curricula for all levels of nursing and health professions students.  We employ active coaching strategies for critical skill development in debriefing, feedback, and simulation-based-education.

Training & Workshops

Led by our team of experienced educators, we offer workshops and training sessions focused on creating psychological safety, brain-based teaching, formative and summative assessment, giving feedback, and debriefing across the curriculum. These workshops prepare faculty to respond to The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education. Training and workshops can be provided online, in person, or in a hybrid approach.

Consultation Services

We provide expert consultation services, including identifying your opportunities for growth and collaboratively developing an implementation plan to achieve shared outcomes. We guide faculty as they revise curricula in response to the new Essentials. Our expertise includes faculty development in topics such as competency-based education, simulation-based education and assessment, and active learning strategies for the classroom.

Mary K. Fey

PhD, RN, CHSE-A, ANEF, FAAN

Dr. Mary Fey has been a nurse educator for over twenty years.  Dr. Fey received a Ph.D. and certificate in Teaching from the University of Maryland. Her initial work as an educator took place in a large academic medical center, where she had oversight of the new nurse transition to practice programs for ten years. She has held several academic appointments in both community colleges and universities.

Dr. Fey’s expertise includes faculty development, curriculum, brain-based teaching strategies, simulation and debriefing, and feedback. Dr. Fey’s scholarly work focuses on simulation, debriefing, and the teacher-learner relationship. She regularly publishes and presents on these topics.

Dr. Fey is Principal Faculty at the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, MA. She consults for the National League for Nursing and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Kate J. Morse

PhD, MSN, RN, FAAN, CHSE, ACNP-Ret

Dr. Kate Morse is a nurse, a retired Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, the assistant dean for Experiential Learning and Innovation, and an associate clinical professor in the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University.

Dr. Morse earned her BSN from the University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, her MSN from San Diego State University, a post-Mater’s Certificate in Nursing Education from California State University, Long Beach, and a Ph.D. in Nursing Education from Villanova University. Morse has extensive clinical experience as a critical and acute care nurse practitioner. After 23 years in practice as a nurse practitioner, she now focuses her care of patients on “simulated patients.” Morse has presented and worked with healthcare simulation centers nationally and internationally, including Canada, Germany, Belgium, France, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Brazil. Her expertise includes active learning, simulation faculty development, and lead educator for the development of the “Speaking Up with Good Judgment” program at Mater Health Services in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Morse actively presents on simulation in healthcare topics regionally, nationally, and internationally. Dr. Morse is passionate about helping learners develop into the healthcare professional they aspire to be and do that through simulation and reflective learning conversations.

A fun fact about Dr. Morse is that she “lives” with two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, as one does not “own” a hound (but it’s the cat who is really in charge!).
